"Sharp Cup" History

 
 

                  
In 1998 the tournament 
was resurrected through the efforts of local sportsmen. 
It was then moved to Halifax Nova Scotia 
and renamed the 
"Nova Scotia International Tuna Tournament."

Today the winners of the 
"Nova Scotia International Tuna Tournament"
which is held every September in Halifax Nova Scotia
are presented with the original 
"Sharp Cup"
 

 

 

The Alton B. Sharp Trophy 
was designed by 
Lynn Bogue Hunt 
and originally presented by 
 Boston sportsman Alton B. Sharp.

"Sharp Cup"

The first International Tuna Tournament 
in which the participants 
competed for the "Sharp Cup"
was held in 1937 at 
Wedgeport Nova Scotia 
and continued until 1972. 
The cup is the 5th oldest 
international sporting trophy 
in the world, 
and is engraved with the names 
of winning delegations from around the globe. 
 

 
Throughout its history 
competing for the "Sharp Cup" 
is also famous 
for attracting people who 
can be described as both famous and infamous.

These include: Kate Smith (Singer/Actress) 
Amelia Earhart (famous pilot) 
Gene Tunney (World Heavyweight Champion), 
Jean Beliveau (NHL Superstar) 
(U.S. President) Franklin D. Roosevelt 
Anthony (Joe Batters) 
Accardo (Chicago Crime Boss)
Robert Maytag (Maytag Washers)
Zane Gray (Novelist)  Hugh Rutherford & 
Ernest Hemingway to mention a few.
